Lessons at Legacy Equestrian Centre- A riding School located in New Germany, Nova Scotia, CanadaLessons

When a new student arrives at Legacy, we take considerable effort to identify their goals. Obviously somebody who wants to become a competitive rider will approach lessons much differently from somebody who wants to learn how to have a safe trail ride or learn how to train their own horse.

The student's safety is vital, therefore, we MUST have all pertinent information before they start riding. It is important we know if the student has any mental or physical challenges and what kind of experiences they have had with horses, good or bad. All this information is essential before the student is matched with a horse as some horses are very good with new or nervous rider and some are not. When a student has conquered one horse it is important to move to another to keep the rider challenged.

Lessons at Legacy are an hour long; however, we like the students to arrive 20 to 30 minutes early. At this time they are given instruction on how to catch, groom and tack up their horses.

After the lesson the students are encouraged to stay and cool their horses down, remove and clean the tack, groom their horses and return them to their stall or paddock. This can take half an hour or more depending on the level of socializing. After a few lessons, if the instructor is confident with the students skills, the students are permitted the independence of managing these tasks with minimal supervision.

Before You Start

You may note that SAFETY is paramount at Legacy Equestrian Centre. We insist that ALL riders wear approved safety helmets and boots which have a defined heel. Now, it is not essential that you run out and buy a top quality riding outfit with matching gloves. It is essential that you wear an approved safety helmet and suitable footwear.

You do not have to buy expensive items, especially if you are outfitting a child. Children will outgrow much of what you buy before they wear it out. Buying second hand is always an option EXCEPT for helmets. One good whack and a helmet may develop a crack WHICH IS NOT VISIBLE to the naked eye BUT will compromise the integrity of the helmet.

Legacy usually has some consignment clothing and a few new helmets available for sale. For your convenience, we have listed several tack shops that we frequent. Tell them you are going to ride at Legacy and they may cut you a deal or spot you a freebee, you never know!
